In early spring, on the first hot days, as soon as the temperature increases significantly, then the first Suslik(Spermophilus suslicus) wake up from their hibernation. First, the males wake up, and then the females (after two weeks) and begin to feed intensively. Plant seeds, but also shoots and flowers of cultivated plants dominate in the diet of Suslik. For Suslik, now is the time to recharge their batteries as soon as possible after the hibernation period, because soon it will be time to reproduce and take care of their offspring. It is a rare species that lives in colonies. It occurs only in the Lublin region, in 8 protected sites, including Roztocze. They prefer steppe habitats, where low vegetation enables efficient detection of threats. Meeting these animals on a warm spring day is a lot of fun for any nature observer.
