Remiz (Remiz pendulinus) is a small bird with an ashen head, a chestnut-colored top of the body, a pale belly and a wide black belt passing through the eye. It lives in alder trees and rows of low trees on the shores of lakes and ponds, clumps of trees growing on the banks of rivers and marshy meadows in river valleys. The nests of fire stations are intricate structures resembling a sack suspended above the water surface. For their construction, they use soft "cats" made of poplars and willows. Each male builds several nests during the season and the females are assessed. It is a polygamous species and its breeding biology is very complicated. Remizy eat insects, arachnids, aphids, and also seeds. In Poland, it is a rare breeding bird. It is a migratory species that comes to us in March and April, and winters in the warm south of Europe, in Asia Minor and even China, India and Iran. At present, the habitats of the firehouses are shrinking and the birds do not have any places to nest, because the wet meadows and swamps are more and more often dried up, and the overgrown pond shores are mowed. Modern fisheries should protect natural ecosystems near the waters to preserve bird biodiversity.
