The Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is a migratory bird and it comes to us at the turn of February and March. However, its first departures to wintering grounds take place in June, but the peak of migration is in October and November. During migration, lapwings rest in fields, exposed bottoms of water bodies or on sandy islands in river valleys. Often the flocks of lapwings are joined by starlings or golden plovers. These birds go to their wintering grounds in Western Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
The lapwing is an increasingly rare bird of the agricultural landscape. The number of this species is decreasing due to the increase in intensification and chemicalisation of agriculture (disappearance of pastures, drainage of wet meadows, etc.). At the same time, mowing meadows too early does not allow for raising young offspring. Additionally, destruction of lapwings' nests by predators (cats, foxes, gray crows) causes brood losses. The observation of lapwing herds in autumn in Roztocze is an extraordinary spectacle that highlights the natural values of this region.
