The Nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes) is a jay-like raven bird, very alert and timid. It lives in vast spruce, pine, fir and mixed forests, preferably with an admixture of hazel. Nuts are her delicacy, but she also eats acorns, fir seeds or pine trees in the mountains, she also does not disdain insects, larvae and invertebrates. In autumn, it stores nuts in various places in the forest (some in the ground, some in tree hollows). These hardworking birds usually cannot exhaust all winter reserves or forget some of them, thus contributing to the creation of diverse forest ecosystems. The nutcracker is found mainly in the mountains (Carpathians, Sudetes), island-like in eastern Poland and Pomerania, and also at individual sites in the Lublin Region, including Roztocze. Its habitats are shrinking due to cutting down old forests and creating forest monocultures. The meeting of these rare birds in Roztocze is a great event for bird watchers.
