One of the first birds to announce spring is the Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). It is a migratory bird that comes to us at the turn of February and March. At the end of February, you can sometimes hear the singing of the lark, flying cranes and geese. In April, almost all the birds will return to their lairs, and in May, they will be the last to arrive: Red- backed Srike, Oriole and Bee-eater. This is a sure sign of the beginning of the most beautiful season for bird watchers because the birds' courtship, singing, dancing begins, all in mating attire. The Lapwing is an increasingly rare bird of the agricultural landscape. The number of this species is decreasing due to the increase in intensification and chemicalisation of agriculture (disappearance of pastures, drainage of wet meadows, etc.). At the same time, mowing meadows too early does not allow for raising young offspring. Additionally, destruction of lapwings' nests by predators (cats, foxes, gray crows) causes brood losses. The observation of flocks of lapwings, first larks, cranes and geese is a centuries-old joy and an extraordinary spectacle that awakens the nature of Roztocze.
